Liquid Argon (LAR)

Symbol: Ar • Boiling point (1 atm): approx. −186 °C • Liquid density: approx. 1.40 kg/L.
Liquid argon (LAR) is argon, a noble (inert) gas, cooled to −186 °C. It is colorless, odorless and non-flammable, and it does not readily react with other substances. When it evaporates, it expands to approximately 840 times its volume as argon gas, which is why tank supply is much more practical than cylinders for businesses with high argon consumption.

Liquid argon supply from OĞULGAZ: on-site cryogenic tank installation with regular tanker deliveries, delivery in portable cryogenic cylinders, and filling of your existing tank — for welding lines, steel production and heat-treatment plants. Based in Istanbul, we have been serving the Marmara region since 1991.

What Is Liquid Argon?

Argon is a noble gas that makes up about 0.93% of air and is obtained by cryogenic air separation. Liquefied at −186 °C, argon is stored in vacuum-insulated tanks and vaporized at the point of use to be supplied as a gas.

The most important property of argon is that it is completely inert: it protects the weld pool and hot metal from oxygen and moisture in the air. In facilities with high consumption, liquid argon eliminates constant cylinder changes, saving both time and storage space.

Liquid Argon Applications

  • Welding: shielding gas for TIG, MIG and robotic welding lines; supplying several stations from a central system.
  • Steel production: the AOD process in stainless steel production and argon stirring in the ladle.
  • Heat treatment and sintering: protective atmospheres that prevent oxidation in furnaces.
  • Metal 3D printing and powder metallurgy: oxygen-free atmospheres in the build chamber.
  • Processing of reactive metals: protection when welding and cutting metals such as titanium.
  • Electronics and laboratories: semiconductor manufacturing and plasma gas in ICP analyzers.

Supply Options

On-site tank installation and tanker filling

For facilities with high, continuous liquid argon consumption, a vacuum-insulated cryogenic tank and vaporizer are installed on your site. The tank is refilled regularly by tanker according to its level, eliminating cylinder changes and stock tracking.

Portable cryogenic cylinders

For medium consumption, laboratories or temporary needs, liquid argon is delivered to your facility in portable cryogenic cylinders (dewars).

Filling your existing tank

If you have your own cryogenic tank or dewar, we fill it for you. We plan the filling frequency together according to your consumption.

For welding gas mixtures, see our gas mixtures; for lower consumption, see argon gas in cylinders.

Safe Handling

  • Risk of asphyxiation: argon is heavier than air and can accumulate in low-lying and enclosed areas such as pits, channels and basements, reducing the oxygen level. These areas must be well ventilated, and an oxygen monitor should be used where necessary.
  • Cold burns: contact with the liquid at −186 °C causes serious injuries. Wear cryogenic gloves, a face shield and long-sleeved work clothing.
  • Pressure build-up: liquid argon evaporates continuously. Never put it in completely sealed containers; only use cryogenic containers with relief valves.
  • Transport: cryogenic containers must not be carried in closed passenger vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature is liquid argon?

Liquid argon boils at approximately −186 °C at atmospheric pressure and is stored as a liquid in vacuum-insulated cryogenic tanks.

What is the difference between liquid argon and argon in cylinders?

They are the same gas. When liquid argon evaporates, it turns into approximately 840 times its volume of argon gas. For high consumption, a liquid argon tank therefore takes up less space and is more practical than storing and changing many cylinders.

When does it make sense to switch to liquid argon in a tank?

Tank supply is usually more efficient if cylinder changes are frequent on your welding line, if you want to supply several stations from a central system, or if your argon consumption keeps growing. We can assess this together based on your consumption.

Is liquid argon dangerous?

Argon is neither flammable nor toxic; however, because it is heavier than air, it can accumulate in low-lying and enclosed areas such as pits, channels and basements and reduce the oxygen level. It is also extremely cold and causes cold burns on contact.

How is the price of liquid argon determined?

The price depends on consumption, the supply method, delivery frequency and location. Fill in the quote form for a price tailored to you.
