Liquid Oxygen (LOX)

Symbol: O₂ • Boiling point (1 atm): −183 °C • Liquid density: approx. 1.14 kg/L.
Liquid oxygen (LOX) is oxygen cooled to −183 °C and turned into a liquid. When this pale blue cryogenic liquid evaporates, it expands to approximately 860 times its volume as gaseous oxygen. This means large quantities of oxygen can be stored in insulated tanks that take up far less space than pressurized cylinders.

Liquid oxygen supply from OĞULGAZ: on-site cryogenic tank installation with regular tanker deliveries, delivery in portable cryogenic cylinders, and filling of your existing tank — for businesses and hospitals with high, continuous oxygen consumption. Based in Istanbul, we have been serving the Marmara region since 1991.

What Is Liquid Oxygen?

Liquid oxygen is produced by cryogenic air separation: air is compressed, cooled and separated into its components according to their different boiling points. The oxygen obtained is kept liquid at −183 °C and transported in vacuum-insulated tanks.

Liquid oxygen does not burn itself, but it is a strong oxidizer: it accelerates and intensifies combustion. That is why it is used both in industrial processes that demand high efficiency and in hospitals’ central oxygen systems.

Liquid Oxygen Applications

  • Iron, steel and metal melting: enriches combustion in furnaces with oxygen to increase efficiency.
  • Glass and ceramics production: oxy-fuel firing delivers higher flame temperatures and lower fuel consumption.
  • Metal cutting and heating: supplies high-consumption oxy-fuel cutting lines through a central system.
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities: supplies oxygen to intensive care units, operating rooms and wards through the central medical gas system.
  • Chemicals and pulp: used in oxidation and bleaching processes.
  • Water and wastewater treatment: increases aeration efficiency in biological treatment.
  • Fish farming (aquaculture): supports dissolved oxygen levels in ponds and tanks.

Medical Liquid Oxygen

In hospitals, high oxygen demand is usually met from an on-site cryogenic tank. The liquid oxygen in the tank passes through a vaporizer, becomes a gas and is delivered to the bedside via the central medical gas system. A tank system provides much higher capacity and uninterrupted supply compared with a cylinder system.

OĞULGAZ supplies medical liquid oxygen to hospitals and healthcare facilities and plans tank deliveries according to consumption. According to the European Pharmacopoeia, medical oxygen must have a purity of at least 99.5%. For medical gases in cylinders, see our medical gases page.

Supply Options

On-site tank installation and tanker filling

For facilities with high, continuous liquid oxygen consumption, a vacuum-insulated cryogenic tank and vaporizer are installed on your site. The tank is refilled regularly by tanker according to its level, eliminating cylinder changes and stock tracking.

Portable cryogenic cylinders

For medium consumption, laboratories or temporary needs, liquid oxygen is delivered to your facility in portable cryogenic cylinders (dewars).

Filling your existing tank

If you have your own cryogenic tank or dewar, we fill it for you. We plan the filling frequency together according to your consumption.

You can also use our gas distribution installation service for the installation of the tank, vaporizer and distribution line.

Safe Handling

  • Cold burns: contact with the liquid at −183 °C causes serious injuries. Wear cryogenic gloves, a face shield and long-sleeved work clothing.
  • Fire risk: liquid oxygen intensifies combustion. Keep it away from oil, grease and flammable materials; no open flames or smoking in the work area.
  • Ventilation: the area must be well ventilated, and the oxygen concentration in the ambient air must not exceed 23.5%.
  • Transport and equipment: cryogenic containers must not be carried in closed passenger vehicles, and tanks and valves must not be tampered with by unauthorized persons.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature is liquid oxygen?

Liquid oxygen boils at −183 °C at atmospheric pressure. It remains liquid below this temperature and is therefore stored in vacuum-insulated cryogenic tanks.

What is the difference between liquid oxygen and gaseous oxygen?

They are the same substance. When liquid oxygen evaporates, it turns into approximately 860 times its volume of gaseous oxygen. For high consumption, tank storage therefore takes up much less space than cylinders and is more practical.

What is needed to install a liquid oxygen tank?

Your monthly consumption, operating pressure and the area where the tank will be placed are assessed, and a suitable tank and vaporizer are selected accordingly. Contact us for a site survey and assessment.

How is the price of liquid oxygen determined?

The price depends on monthly consumption, the supply method (tank, cryogenic cylinder or filling), delivery frequency and location. Fill in the quote form for a price tailored to you.

Do you supply medical liquid oxygen to hospitals?

Yes. We supply medical liquid oxygen to the cryogenic tanks of hospitals and healthcare facilities and plan deliveries according to consumption.

Which regions do you deliver to?

We supply liquid oxygen to Istanbul and the Marmara region.
