Ethylene oxide (EO) is a colorless, mildly sweet-smelling, and flammable gas that easily liquefies near room temperature. Due to its reactive epoxide structure, it requires careful handling; its vapor is heavier than air. In enclosed spaces, proper ventilation, spark prevention, and material compatibility (seals and line components) are essential for safe operation.
Main applications: production of ethylene glycol and its derivatives; also preferred for low-temperature sterilization of medical and food-contact products (under proper quality, validation, and traceability conditions).
Industrially, EO is produced by the partial oxidation of ethylene with oxygen at 200–300 °C.
