Acetylene is a colorless and highly flammable gas, preferred in oxy-acetylene applications such as cutting, heating, and brazing due to its high flame temperature. Owing to its chemically reactive nature, it is stored in special cylinders containing porous filler and solvent (dissolved in acetone or DMF). The use of flashback arrestors on lines and torches is essential for safety.
Main applications: oxy-fuel (oxy-acetylene) welding and cutting, heating/preheating, brazing, and as an instrument gas in certain optical spectrometers.
In industry, acetylene is mostly produced by the reaction of calcium carbide with water, though partial oxidation or cracking of hydrocarbons is also used in some processes.
